I live in western NY and I've never used winter tires or snow chains, because I'm lucky enough to be able to avoid driving until the plows have been around. Yeah, occasionally I skid, and I do have to drive slow-and-careful under certain conditions, but that's life where there's winter.
Studded winter tires are going to cost a whole lot less than selling the car you love for an AWD vehicle. Besides, I don't see them having fun so much as taking risks, assuming the AWD makes driving normally on snow, slush, or ice safe. Accidents I pass later suggest they have a false sense of security.
Buy the tires this winter.
